When a family member has to be hospitalized, it is natural to entrust their medical care entirely to the doctors and nurses. However, did you know that patient safety is not solely the responsibility of healthcare professionals?
The accompanying family plays an equally essential role. As the people closest to the patient who monitor them constantly, the family can act as additional 'eyes and ears' for the medical team to ensure the treatment process runs safely, effectively, and with minimal risk.
Here are a few simple yet highly impactful steps you can take while accompanying a family member in the hospital:
1. Inform About Allergies and Medical History
From the moment the patient is admitted, ensure you have informed the healthcare professionals about any history of allergies to medications, food, or other underlying medical conditions. This is crucial to prevent fatal reactions from the treatments or procedures administered.
2. Report Even the Smallest Changes in Condition
You are the one who knows the patient's habits best. Immediately notify a nurse if the patient suddenly appears more out of breath, extremely weak, confused, restless, or experiences a decreased level of consciousness. Do not hesitate to call the staff, as prompt intervention can prevent the condition from worsening.
3. Help Prevent the Risk of Falls
Patients who are ill, under the influence of anesthesia, or in recovery often feel dizzy and lose their balance. Family members can help prevent falls by ensuring the bed rails are always raised and by assisting the patient when they need to get out of bed or go to the bathroom.
4. Do Not Give Outside Medication or Food Without Permission
Sometimes, families have good intentions when bringing favorite foods or herbal remedies. However, incorrect drug interactions or diets can endanger the patient. Always consult a doctor or nurse before providing food, drinks, or medications from outside the hospital.
5. Do Not Hesitate to Ask
If there are medical explanations, procedures, or treatment instructions you do not understand, ask. Understanding the care plan is a right of the patient and family, and the medical team will gladly explain it to you.
6. Follow the Healthcare Professionals' Instructions
Always adhere to hospital rules, resting schedules, and care instructions provided by the doctors and nurses. This discipline highly supports the patient's recovery process.
Collaboration is Key
Successful treatment depends not only on medical technology or the doctors' expertise but also on the harmonious collaboration between the patient, family, doctors, and nurses. Patient safety is our shared goal.
